Womanist

As a womanist, I am “committed to survival and wholeness of entire people, male and female.” (Alice Walker) My Womanist perspective has been shaped by my experiences of being Black, woman and queer lesbian in a nation filled with people who have been hostile to all these very ways of existing. I try to encourage others to love themselves unconditionally and to do the work to move beyond survival to thriving.

Scholar

In my work, I draw primarily from the narratives and experiences of Black women, particularly lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer Black women.  My additional research interests also include classical and contemporary just war theory and the impact of war and - more broadly speaking - militarism on Black lives. Violence is a common denominator with bigotry and war. The reader will see in my writing how I address the complicity of the Church in oppression and political corruption. They will also see my love for the Church and people of faith from across religious and nonreligious traditions.

Speaker

I have the honor of being invited to speak at conferences and preach in pulpits all around the world. From Rio de Janeiro, Seoul Korea, and other international sites. In America, each year I address audiences within churches, the academy, and local communities. Exploring the “ordinariness” of life to reveal its complexities and nuances is how I often go about developing presentations. My appreciation for the investigative journalism of many reporters during these uncertain times is perhaps why I enjoy the opportunities I’ve had to speak with reporters and write for several mainstream media sites. I am a public theologian who maintains close community ties.
